Is your church actually reproducing disciples?
The struggle to make disciples in many churches is not a passion problem. It is a clarity problem.
Different churches answer this question differently. Different believers describe a disciple in different ways, and that inconsistency is costing us more than we realise.
Some believe a disciple is someone who knows the Bible well. But knowledge without application is not discipleship; it is information.
Others define a disciple as someone committed to spiritual disciplines. But disciplines without transformation can become legalism.
Others point to spiritual gifts. Yet Jesus himself warned that some who prophesy, cast out demons, and perform miracles in his name would hear the words: "I never knew you."
Jesus did not command us to make disciples and leave us without a definition. He defined a disciple through his own words, expectations, and life.
After more than 25 years of ministry, research, and studying the words of Jesus across multiple nations and church contexts, Mike Matumaini identified what he calls The Seven Marks of a Disciple, drawn entirely from the teaching of Jesus himself.
This is why Become Disciples was created: to provide the infrastructure, information, and implementation every church needs for biblical, intentional, and reproducible discipleship.
Our goal is not simply to teach about discipleship. It is to help people become disciples, make disciples, and send disciples.
You can fill a room. You can run the programs. But can your people make disciples who make disciples, without the pastor in the room?
Are you confident your church has a clear, shared definition of a disciple?
Could your leaders, small-group facilitators, and congregation all describe the kind of disciple you are seeking to form, in the same language?
If not, how can you intentionally make disciples, recognise growth, and reproduce discipleship across your church?
Do you have more than a discipleship program? Do you have a clear, biblical, reproducible pathway for forming disciples who make disciples?
We cannot make what we cannot describe. How you define a disciple will determine how you make disciples.
